Over New Year, Sam and I went to Paris. I’ve been there before, but last time I was 13 and on a youth orchestra trip, so I didn’t really get a feel for the city in the way that you can when you’re making your own adventures.
The trip gave me the opportunity to tick two things off my Life List – going on the Eurostar, and kissing at the top of the Eiffel Tower. We aimed to be at the top of the tower at sunset but the queuing crowds conspired against us and we enjoyed sunset from the bottom of the tower instead.
The view was pretty amazing after dark, however, and on reflection I am glad we ended up reaching the top later in the evening than we’d planned.
Straight afterwards we went on a cruise down the Siene which was a lovely way to see, and find out about, lots more of Paris’ historical buildings.
My other highlight of Paris was visiting the department store Printemps. On their top floor there is a restaurant with a panoramic view of the city. I was expecting this restaurant to be extortionately expensive, horrendously busy and a complete let-down but instead I was pleasantly surprised. The food was really good, and reasonably priced, and we were able to get a table with a view straight away.
On New Years Eve itself we went to the Trocadero, the civic building with a direct view across the Siene to the Eiffel Tower, to gather with the crowds and wait for the midnight light show. The atmosphere here was fun and lively, and we met some lovely people from Ecuador in the Crepe queue. Unfortunately the bad attitudes of a few people made this not quite the event it should’ve been – there was a lot of pushing and shoving in the crowd, some very rude people and more than a couple who tried our pockets for things to steal (fortunately we are paranoid and it was all well hidden).
We arrived back in Cardiff, completely exhausted, on Wednesday evening just in time for me to start my new job on Thursday morning. It’s been a whirlwind of a Christmas period, but I’ve enjoyed it, and I will definitely be spending this weekend getting re-acquainted with the sofa!
